Thoughts from Pastor Sam
Unity in the Body of Messiah
“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment,” 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. Phil 1:9-11 (NKJV)
We know that we need to be one in Christ and in unity as Christians but we don’t know how. I think this verse gives us some clear directions. Paul is talking to the church in Philippi, a church that he had started and gone through some real persecution and hardship with. He is praying that their love may abound or super-abound more and more. Then he tells them how. “In knowledge and in all discernment”. Knowledge in this context is not just facts but relationship with God and each other. I can say I know about God but that is different that saying I know God. Paul wants their love to abound in their relationship with God and with each other. Then he says “with all discernment”. Another word for discernment is perception. One of the biggest obstacles to unity in the body of Christ is that we look at others through our own perception instead of through the discernment of the Holy Spirit. If I look at you though my perception or at life with my perception I am very often wrong and I can respond to things or try to resolve issues that exist only in my mind. Our perceptions are at their best still flawed and at their worst complete fantasy(a nice way to say a lie). God perception on the other hand is always right on target and is never given to falsehood of any kind. The Lord also sees and knows the truth in every situation and he knows our motivations and desires intimately. If we seek His perception of ourselves and others and let love abound more and more than it is possible to move toward a unity of thought, purpose and calling in the Lord and we will approve the things that are excellent in ourselves and in others in the Lord.

Opportunity for Service
Three ladies have been sharing the responsibilities for our monthly potluck (first Sunday of the month) for the past several months.
However, one will no longer be able to be involved this way. If you would like to help by joining this group (Maryann Eiland and Beverly Ellefson) please let us know in the church office right away or speak with Maryann or Beverly.
Without people to share this responsibility, we may not be able to continue our potlucks.
